From the Album for the Young, Op. 39: a short, sad song in G minor, simple enough for a first year of study.
The story
Tchaikovsky wrote the Album for the Young in 1878 for his nephew Vladimir, modelled on Schumann’s Album for the Young. Its 24 short pieces describe a child’s day.
The Old French Song is a simple melody over plain chords, sad but calm, like a song half remembered.
Two things to know
- It is one of the easiest pieces in the library to play complete.
- The marking is Moderato assai: quite moderate.
How to play it
Sing the melody in your head as you play, and shape each phrase so it ends softly.
